Whittaker will now play one of the most famous sci-fi characters in television.

Moffat will be handing the reins over to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall for Doctor Who Season 11. Whittaker's casting marks the first ever woman to play the role since William Hartnell originated it in 1963. The show's often had strong female characters, serving as 'companions' to the Doctor, who've often also contributed to significant shifts in the Doctor's character and to saving the world multiple times over, but as yet there has been no woman leading from the front. His last performance in the role will be in the 2017 Christmas special.

"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris Chibnall and with every Whovian on this planet", she said.

"It feels completely overwhelming; as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be". Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role.

Fans of the show got a glimpse of Jodie as their new Doctor walking towards the Tardis during the annoucement.

Doctor Who follows the adventures of a Time Lord who goes by the name Doctor; when he is mortally injured, he regenerates, changing his appearance and personality.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, A-list Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton and Olivia Colman, who played Waller-Bridge's mother in the darkly comic Fleabag, all appeared to be in the mix following the finale of the show's 10th series, which ended at the beginning of July, while front-runners for the role included Kris Marshall, the star of the BBC series Death in Paradise as well as Whittaker.

"Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change", she said. There have been other female Time Lords in the past. "She's going to be a fantastic Doctor", Capaldi remarked.
