The 20-year-old perpetrator was reportedly on Fiche S, which is a watchlist of individuals considered to pose a threat to national security.

A judicial source said the assailant's parents were being held for questioning.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences to the victim's families.

The four people wounded were out of danger, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told reporters overnight.

Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility, but there's no proof yet. Armed with a knife, the offender committed a random massacre, stabbing passers-by.

"Police have now set up a perimeter and say the situation is under control".

"Police were quickly on the scene, in less than five minutes".

This woman describes how it began, in an area full of shops and restaurants.

"We heard someone shout and then a woman screamed 'run inside!' We ran inside and hid under the table", said Klibbe, who teaches English in Paris.

A 26-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were slightly wounded.

Another witness told BFMTV she was eating with friends in a restaurant when she saw somebody passing by shouting for help, pursued by another person.

The attacker was killed by police after the stabbing near the Opera Garnier on a busy Saturday night. Neither the wounded nor the person killed were immediately identified.

Authorities have not revealed the identity of the person killed in Saturday's attack, but the judicial source said he was a man aged 29.

Counterterrorism authorities are leading the investigation of the attack.

French media reported Sunday that Azimov had lived in Strasbourg, which is 492 kilometers (306 miles) from Paris.

Twitter user Fiona Zanetti tweeted: "I was in a restaurant rue saint Augustin in the 2eme arrondissement, crowd panic, blood, a guy with a knife in the streets and people screaming, avoid the area if you can". Aamaq didn't provide evidence for its claim.

Within hours of the attack, the Islamic State's news agency called the suspected attacker one of its "soldiers".

There have also been a string of less deadly but frequent attacks by lone wolf jihadists wielding knives or guns.

The official said Sunday the assailant had French nationality but was born in the Russian republic. CNN adds that the suspect was later fatally shot by police.
